Sanctum (2011)
I really do not know where to begin with this one.
Sanctum has to be one of the worst films I have ever seen. It earns two points only because I did not spot many continuity errors and the sets were quite impressive. That is where the praise ends.
The script is truly awful, which is probably what led to the acting being non-existent. There is a scene early on where one of the characters shows us his torch. From the very moment you see it, you know it will reappear. It practically screams at you.
Here is the story in outline. A diving team explores a large cave system. They become cut off from the exit and must find a new way out. Will they or will they not? Will they all survive?
Within ten minutes, you stop caring who lives or dies or whether they escape. Within twenty minutes, you have worked out exactly who lives, who dies and how it ends. Within thirty minutes, you are questioning your own life choices for still watching.
I am genuinely disappointed in Richard Roxburgh. I have always considered him a quality actor, so I am hoping this was simply an off day. Rhys Wakefield? His time on Home and Away apparently taught him everything he knows about actoring. I have seen more emotional range in a pile of vomit outside a nightclub at 4am. And Ioan Gruffudd. Why does this man keep being cast in roles that require an American accent? He cannot do it. He sounds like I did at fifteen, starring in a school production of To Kill a Mockingbird.
Do not waste 108 minutes of your life on this Cameron-produced disappointment.
Review over. I am going to bed to calm down.
